Now to the important stuff: Some of you may not be aware of the situation with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra in Florida where my parents perform. The short of it is, when the musicians didn’t agree to the last offer by the Association for their new contract, the Association canceled two weeks of concerts and locked the doors. To get the whole story, please visit www.jsomusicians.org. It has been over a week now, and after a lot of media coverage and public support, the Association is still not willing to change their last offer and negotiate with the musicians affected by the lockout. The most important thing is to contact the people listed on the website asking them to do something about what has happened. Please send letters or emails to let the management know that live music is vital to the future of Jacksonville and is not something that should lightly be forgotten. A benefit concert is scheduled for Sunday, November 25 (more details on the website) so if you’re in town please go and show your support.

We were very excited to learn from our landlord that we could have up to 40 trick-or-treaters on Halloween. The past two years in the apartment building there weren’t any kids, so we were looking forward to giving out candy for the first time. I bought three small to medium size bags of candy and thought that it would probably be enough. Wednesday night we rushed home after work to hand out candy to the droves of trick-or-treaters we imagined were looking sadly at our empty house. We only had one until about 8:00 pm, when all of a sudden they came in a steady stream of kids through teenagers, who were on the edge of being too old for asking for Halloween candy. When they kept coming Steven made an emergency run to the grocery store to get more candy, because the last thing we wanted to do was to run out! Of course it started to slack off and by 9:45 pm the street was quiet. Good thing the candy he bought was stuff we liked! We had a great time and were very pleased with our first Halloween in the neighborhood.
