Weirdest Concert Ever

So, it has been so long since I’ve blogged that I’m starting with this concert that Jessi and I went to on May 3. We saw the Kronos Quartet at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, which in itself is pretty cool. This concert was part of the World Music Series, and was all music from Iceland and Sweden. The weird part comes in with the Inuit throat singer Tanya Tagaq, who toured with Bjork a few years back and apparently has quite a following. I was particularly interested in how the throat singing thing works, which can sound like two pitches at once to a kind of weird low grunting. All in all, it was a very unique concert experience :)

Concert details can be found here. Let me just say, when the singer came out my mouth stayed dropped open because the things she did were so fascinating, cool, weird, disturbing, and even at times almost inappropriate! They premiered a piece that the quartet and Tagaq composed together about sounds and feelings from Nunavut, the Inuit word for “our land.” It was haunting and beautiful at times, and then other times was remarkably like an orgy on stage. You can see a documentary on the creation of the piece below:

If that’s not enough for ya, here’s a video of her showing more of the kind of singing we heard at the concert:
