I need to rant about stupid people – more specifically, the kind of stupid that can harm people or animals. Southern California is in a heat wave, so today it was about 105 degrees in Burbank. It is up to 110 in places like Woodland Hills, where a day or two ago a Rottweiler died after his owners left him in a locked car for 90 minutes.

Today I was out doing my errands when a woman walks into the bank and asks in a loud voice, does anyone here own the white mini-van with a dog inside? No one answered and she left. After I went to the post office I walked back by the bank to the parking lot and saw her standing next to the white mini-van with a really cute little long-haired dog inside. She said that the owners must be in the restaurant next door, and that she had already been waiting 30 minutes. There was a thermometer on the drivers side door that registered 100 degrees, which is unacceptably hot when you are a human, much less a long-haired dog. She had called the Police and Animal Control, and I called them too to try to get faster service. I took pictures of the dog, the temperature, and the license plate for proof, just in case the owner came back. And of course, the owners came back before the police arrived. They were completely uncaring and unapologetic about leaving their dog in that condition while they ate lunch in a nice air-conditioned restaurant. Literally as soon as they pulled out the animal control officer came up. She was going to go around the block looking for the plate number I gave her, but there wasn’t anything they could do after the fact.

This situation just makes me so mad, especially the way the owners reacted – completely self-righteous and un-empathic. Arg!
